Chapter Seven

She already knew she was going to lie. They had only just started repairing things between the two of them; she wasn’t going to wreck that by telling her mother the truth of why she was skipping out on their evening together. Instead, she forced a smile on her face and poked her head into the living room. “I just got text from Alyssa. Her car broke down, and I need to go give her a ride home. The pizza’s on the counter; there should be a pizza cutter in one of the drawers by the sink. I won’t be gone too long.”

“Do you want me to wait for you?”

“No, you go ahead and eat while it’s warm. I’ll pick up ice cream or something on the way home, and we can eat that together.”

“All right. Tell her I say hi. Is she still working for you?”

“Yep. I’ll see if she can meet us for lunch sometime while you’re here. I’m sure she’ll be glad to catch up with you.”

Before her mother could say anything else, she ducked back into the kitchen, grabbing her jacket from the closet and slamming her feet into her shoes. Latte’s harness was hanging up just inside the closet door, and she took it down, crouching to put it on the cat, who barely struggled at all. Making sure she had the leash held tightly in her hand, she swept her purse and her phone off the counter, took her keys in her hand, and stepped outside.

Latte led the way, tugging down the sidewalk. Lorelei hesitated, then scooped her up and got into the car instead. She put the cat in the passenger seat, then backed out, pulling onto the street and heading the direction the cat had wanted to go. It would be faster than walking for miles; she didn’t know quite how long Latte’s range extended, but it went at least to the nursing home, which was five miles away.

Latte immediately put her paws up on the dashboard, staring out into the night. Lorelei kept going, driving slowly since half of her attention was on the cat, until Latte shifted, moving to climb onto Lorelei’s lap and peer out the driver’s side window. Lorelei took the next left turn, then the next, then evened it all out with a right turn, heading further and further out of town, past the last lonely pub. Finally, after using the cat as a sort of makeshift compass, she had to pull over and stop on a lonely stretch of road, surrounded by nothing but trees. Latte kept scrambling back and forth, trying to get out and she knew that whoever they were following was close.

“Hold on,” Lorelei said irritably. “I may not be a genius, but I’m not stupid enough to think that going out into a dark forest at night with nothing but my cat to protect myself, especially knowing that someone is in fatal danger out there, is a good idea. Let me at least tell Mr.
